AdOff Premium vs Brave VPN + Shield
TL;DR: Brave VPN and Shield are built into Brave Browser — they only work when you use Brave. AdOff Premium is an extension that works on every browser you already use: Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera, Safari. You don't have to switch browsers to get real ad blocking and VPN protection.
The fundamental difference: browser-lock vs browser-agnostic
This is the core issue. Brave is a browser with built-in ad blocking and VPN. AdOff is an extension that works inside any browser.

The browser lock-in problem
Brave is built on Chromium. This means:
- Brave inherits Chromium's rendering engine — not a bad thing for compatibility, but worth knowing
- Brave's features (Shield, VPN, Rewards) only work in Brave — they're not transferable to your other browsers
- If you use Chrome at work, Firefox for development, and Safari on iOS, Brave's protection doesn't follow you
- Brave VPN is a separate premium add-on on top of Brave — it's not included in the base price

The Brave VPN torrent problem
This is a significant limitation: Brave VPN explicitly blocks P2P / torrenting traffic on most servers. Their VPN is optimized for privacy and general browsing, not for torrent users.

The ad blocking depth
Both Brave and AdOff use list-based ad blocking. The difference is in depth:
- Brave Shield: Good at blocking ads via filter lists. Blocks known ad networks, trackers, and scripts. Works at the network level.
- AdOff: Same network blocking (144 rules) plus CSS cosmetic filtering AND an IMA SDK stub replacement for video ads. When a streaming player calls Google's IMA advertising SDK, AdOff returns "no ads available" and the video starts immediately. This is more reliable than list-based blocking for video.
The Stealth Mode difference
Brave's "Aggressive" Shield mode blocks scripts, fingerprints, and third-party cookies. It's effective privacy protection — but it's not designed to spoof the browser environment specifically to bypass anti-adblock walls.
AdOff's Stealth Mode actively spoofs:
- Browser fingerprint variables (screen resolution, canvas, WebGL, installed fonts)
- JavaScript objects used to detect ad blockers

Brave has a "Brave Rewards" system that pays users in BAT (Basic Attention Token) for viewing "privacy-respecting ads." Some users love this. Others find it confusing, intrusive, or simply not worth the privacy tradeoff of having yet another tracking system (even a privacy-focused one).
