The mechanism, step by step

When a RaiPlay or Infinity page loads in your browser, the player normally downloads the IMA SDK from Google's servers to schedule ad breaks. AdOff redirects that request to a stub bundled with the extension. The stub speaks enough of the SDK's language to keep the player happy, and when the player asks to start an ad it answers "content resume requested" straight away.

The programme then plays without the break. No video is re-downloaded and nothing about the content stream changes.

Rai, Mediaset and Discovery monetise catch-up viewing with ads inserted through a standard SDK, which is exactly the layer a browser extension can intercept.
