Ad Blocker for German Catch-Up TV: ZDF, ARD, RTL, Joyn

AdOff removes pre-roll and mid-roll ads from German-language catch-up TV platforms in the browser, in most cases. It replaces the Google IMA ad SDK those players load with a stub that instantly resumes playback, so ZDF, ARD or Joyn run without ad breaks. Coverage follows the SDK: it applies while these services keep using the standard player integration.

German-language services covered

Public and commercial broadcasters in the German-speaking market monetise their mediatheks with video advertising served through the standard Google IMA SDK. AdOff covers:

How the stub handles the ad break

German mediathek players typically integrate the IMA SDK to schedule pre-rolls and mid-rolls. AdOff redirects the SDK script request to a bundled stub. When the player asks the stub to begin an ad break, the stub answers immediately with a content-resume signal, and playback continues without the break.

The video stream is never touched — only the advertising orchestration layer is swapped out, locally, inside your browser.

Public broadcasters, private broadcasters, same mechanism

It may seem odd that a browser extension can affect both the public mediatheks (ZDF, ARD) and commercial players (RTL+, Joyn, ServusTV). The reason is that all of them converge on the same ad SDK for their browser players. Wherever the standard SDK is in play, the same neutralisation applies. This is why catch-up TV behaves differently from subscription streaming, where ads are stitched server-side and left out of the extension on purpose.

What else AdOff filters on these sites

Around the player, the extension runs 180 static network rules against ad and tracking domains plus a cosmetic CSS/DOM filter that hides banners and promotional overlays. On Joyn or RTL pages this trims promo boxes and billboards from the interface, not just video interruptions.

Frequently asked questions

Does it remove ads from the ZDF Mediathek?

In most cases yes: when the ZDF web player loads advertising through the Google IMA SDK, AdOff substitutes a stub that resumes the programme immediately. Coverage follows the SDK — if ZDF changes insertion technology, results can differ.

Can I skip the ads on Joyn for free?

AdOff is a free browser extension that neutralises the IMA ad SDK in the Joyn web player, so breaks usually do not play. Joyn's paid tiers are a separate commercial product; AdOff does not interact with your account.

Does it work on ORF and ServusTV in Austria?

Yes, both are part of the covered German-language group. The same mechanism applies when their browser players request the standard ad SDK.

Does AdOff replace the ARD/ZDF Rundfunkbeitrag?

No. The extension only affects advertising within the player and on the page. The Rundfunkbeitrag is a legal contribution and entirely unrelated to browser ad blocking.

What about the ZDF or Joyn smart TV app?

AdOff only works in desktop browsers. Smart TV apps, mobile apps and streaming sticks are outside its scope.
